Workshop description

In the Feldenkrais For Dancers Workshop, you can begin
to rediscover your innate capacity for graceful, easy
movement through increasing your awareness of how you
have learned to adapt physically to the world around
you. Each two-hour workshop will focus on a theme
chosen for its relevance to the specific needs of
dancers and will draw upon knowledge of biomechanics
and an empirical understanding of human learning.

In class, students will be verbally directed through a
sequence of related movements designed to improve some
aspect of physical functioning (e.g., freedom of the
head, ribcage, arms, legs). Students will be
encouraged to learn at their own pace, moving slowly
and gently so as to increase their sensitivity to the
quality of their own movements.

Benefits include:

Increased freedom and ease of movement

Improved balance and coordination

Increased flexibility

Injury prevention

Rehabilitation from injury

Increased expressive range

Improved understanding of skeletal anatomy as it relates to dance

Workshop Description

In these two classes we will explore intricate coordination, while paring down our embodiment of movement to its spatial and sensory elements. We will investigate what it means to have an integrative dance practice, using techniques that emphasize mind/body awareness and alignment through imagery. In a simple warm-up, designed to bring space, direction, and flow of energy through the joints, we will work with breath, form, and oppositional forces in the body. Full-bodied phrase work will draw on internal and external geometries (both imagined and real), and on our personal and collective senses of time.

Cori Olinghouse

Cori Olinghouse was a member of the Trisha Brown Dance Company from 2002-2006. During her time there she performed as a soloist at the Bolshoi Ballet and taught material to Etoile dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet for Trisha Brown’s 2004 creation, O Composite. She teaches regularly at the Trisha Brown Dance Studios and Dance New Amsterdam in New York City, and she has been a guest teacher at the London Contemporary Dance School, Bennington College, and Sushi Visual and Performing Arts Gallery, among others. Since 1997, Cori has maintained a duet history in improvisation with Susan Sgorbati and is currently involved in teaching and performance residencies with The Emergent Improvisation Project. Her own work has been presented at Bennington College, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, and the Improvisation Festival in New York City. Cori’s approach to dance is influenced by her study of the Alexander Technique. In September, she joined the Manhattan Center for the Alexander Technique to pursue her certification to become a teacher.
